How to ship books
Books are dense and corner-sensitive. The cheap way to ship books is a snug wrap, honest packed weight, and a Ground-like commercial label — not a huge carton of air, and not Media Mail unless the contents actually qualify.
Pack so the book survives
- Wrap the book (or stack) so corners cannot punch a mailer.
- Use a rigid book wrap or a small box if the title is valuable or hardcover.
- Fill leftover space. Books shift and crush jackets.
- Cover old barcodes on used boxes.
Weight and size
A paperback can be light; a textbook is not. Weigh the finished wrap. Use the package weight calculator if you are adding several titles. A book in a giant gift box can trip dimensional weight — downsize.
Media Mail — only when it is legal
Media Mail is a restricted USPS class for eligible educational media. It is slower and can be opened for inspection. Do not use it for general merchandise, advertising, or “a book plus a shirt.” If you are not sure it qualifies, buy a regular parcel service.
Which carrier
Start with Ground Advantage and UPS in the same rate comparison. Dense small parcels often stay on USPS. Heavier stacks can flip. Do not hard-code a winner.
